To reinforce this sense of adoration, portraits of the leader are plastered throughout the city and the telescreens constantly launch slogans proclaiming his glory (e.g. “Big Brother is watching you”). 1984 is often considered to be a novel belonging to the literary genre of dystopia or anti-utopia. This concept is the opposite to that of utopia: whilst utopia describes perfect society models, dystopia novels give a vision – usually futuristic – of a seemingly perfect society, which in reality is rejected as it makes life unbearable.

Drawing on his experience of the Spanish Civil War, Orwell wanted to propose a personal conception of what could become everyday life in a totalitarian state. He thus tries to evoke a society that could exist, without knowing whether this will really be the case.
